Herbert Heathcote was born in Buxton, Derbyshire, 18th July, 1888, and he enlisted on the 18th August 1914 at Gisborne, New Zealand. He was employed as a butcher, and was living at the Te Keraka Hotel, Poverty Bay, New Zealand. He stated his next of kin as his father, Herbert Heathcote, of Earl Sterndale, Derbyshire. Five feet four and a quarter inches tall, he weighed eleven stone two pounds, had a fair complexion, hazel eyes and medium hair, and was an Anglican.
